Palisadian Dresses Cast for Westside Ballet's "Nutcracker"

For 39 years, Westside Ballet of Santa Monica has staged 'The Nutcracker.' This year's performances, at 1 and 5 p.m., will be held on the weekends of December 3-4 and December 10-11 at the Wadsworth Theatre, 11301 Wilshire Blvd. in Brentwood.Artistic Director Yvonne Mounsey, founder of Westside Ballet of Santa Monica and former principal dancer with New York City Ballet under George Balanchine, will oversee the production.
Westside Ballet, which draws its company from the affiliated Westside Ballet School, will feature Chung-Myung Park and Palisadian Paloma Connolly (a student at Palisades High School) as the Sugarplum Fairy.Pacific Palisades resident Liz Wasynczuk has served as Westside Ballet's wardrobe director for 16 years.
She trained at the former Ebsen School of Ballet in the Palisades, and later became a ballet instructor. While teaching at the Ebsen School, Liz learned how to design and make costumes and caught the attention of Mounsey. Liz started working at Westside Ballet in the mid-1990s, and has made costumes for the crystal bells and the mirlitons, designed the mice costumes and made dewdrop costumes. Her work on 'The Nutcracker' begins in late September.'Once we get the casting information we call the dancers in for the fittings and organize the moms, who volunteer to help with the alterations and fittings,' Liz says. 'Every week we are fitting a different group of kids.Too Old to Wear a Sheer Dress? Costumes have to be altered and cleaned. We are working right up to the very end and through the performances.'
The pace is hectic. 'There are always last-minute costume changes to be made. I work backstage at all the performances and dress rehearsals with volunteers and moms. We have to make quick changes and work carefully, but somehow it always works out.'One of Liz's best memories of working with Yvonne over the years was when Yvonne asked her to design the crystal bells costumes.
'Yvonne called me into her office one day and told me she was creating a new dance in 'The Nutcracker' that she wanted to call the crystal bells. She needed costumes and she wanted me to create them. Yvonne only told me she wanted them to be blue and white, so I made a costume. She's always been very excited and positive when I bring something to her. I've always had a winning ticket with it. I love working with her.'Liz has two children, Steven, 26, and Ilona, 28 (who began ballet lessons at Westside School of Ballet at age 11).

How do you feel about the recent developments in the fashion industry?

Viet Nam's fashion has witnessed impressive progress, but still, there are typical barriers coming from small issues like the lack of good drawing papers or nice-quality fabric.I know some famous Vietnamese designers who have to buy fabric in Thailand or have it imported from European countries at a price one half as expensive as the same in the US. It's too high in comparison with the living standards in Viet Nam. But our designers have little choice.
Also, I have wandered around to look for good Vietnamese tailors, and have realised most of them are self-taught. Many are not trained systematically, and thus, it is common to see a dress that needs at least five steps to be made in only two or three. The tailor may think the other steps are not necessary, but in fact, they are the ones that determine the quality shape of a dress. That's why, regarding mass products, Vietnamese tailors can only work with simple designs. They don't have enough skills to make sophisticated ones.I joined the show because I really wanted to introduce my collection to the Vietnamese. I am glad to see the achievements that we have gained in the fashion field recently, and now I am ready and eager to contribute something to that development.
In the fall of 1961, I bought four soft black leather skins and made a vest to match Steve's, but fringed the bottom, with a scissors and pushed up multiple colored beads into the fringe. I made a matching shoulder bag with fringe and beads. There was a tiny bit of leather left over and I made a skirt stopping two inches above my knee, which I kept cutting shorter and shorter, thus the birth of the mini. I shortened the leather until he was MINE. I was soon hired as a "pass the hat girl" for the Playhouse Cafe and collected money for my folk singers, Bobby Zimmerman (Bob Dylan), Ritchie Havens, Fred Neil, and Steve, who renamed me "Peaches Latour". Steve was married, had a daughter Lisa, (Rosanna Arquette), and was recently separated from his wife, Brenda, who had been a nude model for artists. I had some serious competition. In my village apartment, I continued to sell leather clothes for men and women and used the money to move to Paris.
Mia and I showed our short leather clothes in the couture shows in Paris July 1964 after having been "discovered " by couturier, Louis Feraud. Our four inch above the knee dresses were called 'YeYe' fashions by the press, not minis. In London in the same summer, John Bates the designer of the house of Jean Veron, one of the first English ready to wear houses, designed above the knee dresses in Pop Art style.

Too Old to Wear a Sheer Dress?

I hope Susan Sarandon will forgive me for this. But her recent wearing of the infamous Stella McCartney polka dot sheer dress really made a mess out of things.I'll be the first to tell you that without fail, like 99% of the time, anyone can pull off anything regardless of age. But this sheer dress on 65-year-old Susan Sarandon may just be the 1 percent. For starters, seen on other, younger celebrities the half-sheer dress was sexy, chic and fitted.
On Susan Sarandon it looks, well, not so much. She – quite inexplicably – opted to wear a very visible nude bra with this dress. And it's totally obvious. These look like the kind of comfort shoes women wear with grainy suntan-colored pantyhose, not with a designer dress that cost well over $1000. Not that there's anything wrong with wearing comfort shoes – it's just that if you need them, you may be past the age of wearing see-through dresses.Susan Sarandon is a gorgeous woman who looks like she took some pretty bad styling advice. Let's hope she goes back to her great-for-her-figure dresses that feature a knotted bodice and shapely styling.

When it comes to business attire, dress how you want to be perceived

You only get one chance to make the right first impression and quite often another person’s perception of you is how you look. Generally, it is best to err on the side of conservatism when donning business attire.“Dressing for success means different things to different people and industries,” said Dawn Johnson, vice president, membership, Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce. “My rule of thumb is, ‘Dress as you want to be perceived.’ You never know when you will meet a future client or employer.”
Johnson said you can always look professional, even if you don’t work in a traditional office setting. Neat, clean, ironed and good-fitting clothing make a statement.“I am frequently asked (about) what is appropriate dress for our chamber events,” Johnson said. “I let them know to come dressed as you would when seeing a prospective client. And if you are unsure of the type of dress, go more traditional. Remember, you never have a second chance at a first impression.”
Paula Baker, an assistant prosecuting attorney in Muskegon County, said her thoughts on business dress are pretty generic considering the fact she wears suits to the office and in the courtroom.“In my career, I’ve found it’s better to dress conservatively,” Baker said. The gathering of the year 2011 Herve Leger is undoubtedly an advantage over reducing. “It’s important to know your audience and to dress accordingly.”She likes to dress up a conservative suit with a pair of fashionable shoes or a colorful blouse.
Eloise Selleck, former businesswoman and current senior volunteer, said things have changed a lot over the years.“We used to wear hats and gloves,” Selleck said. “Now, I feel I have to dress down a bit so as not to stand out.”She believes the objective shouldn’t be about dressing to outshine someone else.“It should come down to how you lead and how you live,” Selleck said.“Today, a person seeking employment needs to be job ready from sunup to sundown, because it’s connections that land the job,” said D. K. Christi, consultant, speaker, author, Muskegon native and current Florida resident. “First impressions cannot be repeated.”
Christi said that although getting the job is the first priority, attention to details apply admirably to moving up on the job.“Today’s emphasis on youth and fitness demands a healthy lifestyle and clothes that are appropriate to the body type, whether casual or for business meetings and interviews,” Christi said. “Dresses are in style again; women can be strong in skills and present elegance with a conservative skirt, blouse and jacket or dress and jacket or sweater. A stylish scarf may be the finishing touch.”

Occupy Wall Street Dresses Up for Halloween

Anti-capitalist zombies, equality-preaching gypsies and the "Wicked Witch of Wall Street" converged at Zuccotti Park Monday to celebrate Halloween amid the weeks-long Occupy Wall Street protest.Nearly all of the costumes at the demonstration's home base were protest-related — from a witch draped in photocopied money to a stilt walker carrying a sign reading, "Insatiable Growth is Not Sustainable."
"This is my humorous, Halloween way of saying, 'We can't inflate the economy,'" said the stilt walker, Bibi Farber, 48, a Hudson Valley resident and professional performer who paired her stilts with a sparkly pink outfit."Nothing can keep growing forever," Farber continued, citing the recent housing bubble. "I feel like money is over. We need to turn toward each other and barter and grow our own food."
Several long-term Occupy Wall Street protesters who had just weathered a freezing, exhausting weekend in Zuccotti Park said they dressed up to raise the group's spirits."Instead of politicking about everything, for one day we can have some type of fun," said a 27-year-old man from Queens who goes by "White Tru" and wore the "Ghostface" mask from the "Scream" films."I figure I'll dress up a little bit, scare a few people, have a few laughs," he said.Occupy Wall Street also held costume-crafting workshops for more elaborate corporate-greed-fighting getups, including a new superhero: "Unemployed Man."
Protesters wearing the handmade costumes will march from Zuccotti Park to Greenwich Village for its famous annual Halloween parade. While Occupy Wall Street protesters donned disguises, other people across the city were dressing up as the protesters — a costume the real demonstrators greeted with bemusement."If they're serious about it, I think it's kind of cool," said Yvette Vigo, 45, a Bronx resident who has been living at Occupy Wall Street.
A 22-year-old man from North Carolina who goes by "Poncho" was surprised to hear that anyone would want to be an Occupy Wall Street demonstrator for Halloween."It's kind of sad that we're a pop-culture phenomenon now," he said. "But I guess any sort of exposure is good exposure."
Mariah is the only girl in her school who competes in these beauty pageants and Angela insists that neither she, nor any mums -she knows, encourage their children to grow up before their time.

Kim Kardashian leaves $1 million wedding ring at home

The 30-year-old newlywed has some serious bling: Her 20.5-carat platinum engagement ring is worth an estimated $1 million, and her platinum and diamond Lorraine Schwartz wedding band is worth around $200,000. "(But) I don't wear (any jewelry) to work out," she told Women's Wear Daily in an interview published Tuesday. "I was leaving the gym yesterday and I didn't have my (wedding) ring on, and there (were) all these photographers taking pictures, and I said to my sister, 'Just watch, Kourtney. You will see a story (bearing the headline) 'Kim Without Her Ring. Trouble in Paradise.'"
But rings aren't the only jewelry the reality star has banned from the gym. She's boycotted jewelry altogether any time that she's breaking a sweat. "I see women coming to the gym with earrings on, " she said. "I can't do it." Kardashian — who says she's "really big on Herve Leger V neck dresses" — is also completely jewelry free? when it's time to hit the sack. "For some reason I need it all off," she said. "(But some people) sleep with their earrings on."
So what's Kardashian's caveat when it comes to jewelry in the Kardashian Kollection? "I am really really picky about my finishes," she said. "We also have to make sure the pieces are not too heavy, especially earrings."
As a former women’s studies major and daughter of the ’70s, finding a prince is not top on the list of goals I envision for empowered young women. Reflecting on the Disney princess movies, though, finding a prince who will save the day and whisk you off your feet is exactly the value being sold. How about a woman who saves the prince instead? Or, even better, one who doesn’t even know any princes, is really self-sufficient, and lives happily ever after anyway?
As it turns out, around the same time I wondered about the messages and models my new daughter would soon face, Orenstein was having similar thoughts and the idea for Cinderella Ate My Daughter was born. In the book, she tells the story of how a Disney vice president struck gold in the late '90s when he went to a Disney on Ice show and saw, horror of horrors, girls running around in homemade princess dresses. God forbid this kind of role-playing should include any creative thinking or variation!

Dress for Success is paving the way for women to re-build their lives

DFS has partnered with the Harris School of Business, in addition to other organizations.  Once the women are referred to DFS, an appointment is set up to come to the boutique and complete their transition process.“DFS Philadelphia suits six to eight clients per hour, so a number of expert personal shoppers are needed to make the process run smoothly,” Lora Carter, volunteer coordinator for DFS Philadelphia, said.

Now as volunteer coordinator, she is responsible for recruiting new volunteers to the organization.“I desired to give back to the community,” Carter said. “I always had a passion for helping women, fashion and creativity.”
When a woman enters DFS, she is met by an image consultant. They discuss what type of job the woman is attempting to obtain and what her personal style is. Facebook helps reunite bride with lost wedding dress

David Thibault, the co-owner of Island Dogs Bar, was standing outside his establishment last Tuesday when two tourists handed him a garment bag and said it had just fallen off a truck. When he opened it, he saw white lace, and said “Holy shiznit, it’s a wedding dress!”
“At first I didn’t know what to do, but I knew someone had to know who the owners of the Herve Leger V neck dresses were,” Thibault said according to Break Loose From Your Chain, the bar’s blog. “I opened it up and said, Oh my God,” Thibault told CBS News. “If they’re going to be married, they’re going to need this.”
Thibault thought about calling the police but chose to post about the dress on Island Dogs Facebook Page, asking patrons to spread the word. Here’s the message that ended up saving the day:Ok. Someone’s wedding dress just fell off a truck in front of island dogs!!! No info on the garment bag. Not sure if this post will work, but if any of you know of a bride looking for her dress we have it at Island Dogs.
German newlywed Sandra Scharf and her new husband Michael eventually realized they’d lost the dress. They were on their return drive from their honeymoon and were getting ready to catch a flight out of Fort Myers, Florida with their 8-month-old twins but chose to head back to Key West, Florida. The couple was organizing a November 2 reception in Germany, and Scharf naturally wanted to wear her wedding dress.
The couple married on Captiva Island on August 22 and had honeymooned in the Keys, which is where the bar in question is located. “My husband put it on top of the car when we were loading the trunk of the car,” Scharf said. “We forgot it was on top of the car. We started to drive, and it fell off.”
The couple searched the streets, Scharf’s husband even offered to get her a new dress, and then finally they walked into the Rum Barrel, a bar just across the street from Island Dogs, with a $500 reward note. This was just a few hours after they had lost the dress, but already many people had checked Facebook.
Julie Lynch recalls she was waiting tables when frantic Scharf handed her the note and simply uttered: “Wedding dress.” Thankfully, she was a Facebook user. “I said, ‘Oh, I know where it is. I saw it on Facebook this morning,’” Lynch said. She sent the couple across the street to Island Dogs and they returned with the lost item minutes later.

our dresses website story

Online since September 1996, our website is a garment manufacturing company for the new millennium. Operating exclusively over the Internet, this 21st Century clothing company has become legendary for its exceptional dresses and customer service in very short time.
Perhaps the most important reason for website's meteoric success is its designer Odette Christiane. Known as one of the most creative and influential designers to emerge from the Los Angeles fashion scene in the last twenty years, Christiane has become of the fashion world's preeminent trendsetters. Born is Marseilles, France and raised in Los Angeles, California, Christiane's fashions reflect a hybrid point of view that integrates her two very distinct cultural experiences. By weaving together the seductive allure of French style and the drama and energy of Los Angeles, Christiane's designs transcend and transform the usual categories of artistic craftsmanship.Cheryl Cole's size DOUBLE zero dress up for sale on eBay.
Christiane channels her instinctive knowledge of what women desire from clothing in the creation of couture designs that is both elegant and refreshing. Christiane reveals that her aesthetic philosophy is "to design clothes that people remember, clothing that is innocent in form, but daring enough to awaken the female body."
Working with painstaking attention to detail, Christiane utilizes her skills as both a designer and a patternmaker to transform ideas into clothing. Christiane spends a tremendous amount of time with each design, paying particularly close attention to both the creative detail and the perfection of the fit. She prefers to work with a mix of fabrics, the practice that lends her creation a richness of texture and form unparalleled by any contemporary designer. The resulting designs are sufficiently understated so as not to upstage their wearer but posses a simple elegance certain to set her apart from the crowd.
Over the last twenty years, Christiane's designs have been featured in the premier department and specialty stores around the world, from Harrods and Harvey Nichols in London, to Saks Fifth Avenue and Bloomingdale's in the United States. Additionally, her designs are frequently seen on many high profile individuals, both on and off the screen.
Having great designs is only part of the equation of website's success; the second part of the equation is the quality of its clothing. To insure the highest quality of its clothing, all garments sold at website are produced in-house at the company's state-of-the-art manufacturing and distribution facility in Southern California. Although the company has been in business for over thirty-five years, it is not afraid to utilize the technologies of the future to bring the cutting edge fashion of today.

Small fishing weights were attached to the dresses

The shoot was carried out over three days in July with a huge crew of 15 models, photographers, videographers, safety divers, logistics managers, lighting assistants and air providers working between 5.30am and midnight every day to capture the perfect shot.
Sharon said: 'Obviously, the fact we were shooting in the depths of the sea rather than in a shallow water pool introduced us with some unique challenges, which made the end result so much more worthwhile.
'For instance, when shooting in a depth of 20 meters, there is no way a model can descend over and over again by free diving and still have enough air to allow for a few photographs to be taken before she ascends again.'The three models featured in the shoot needed to be experienced scuba divers and were tied with fishing lines attached to weights to keep them in place.Kids dress up as fairy-tale characters, superheroes for Missoula festival.
A dedicated 'air provider' diver was assigned to each model to give them enough air from a scuba tank so they could hold their breath for a few seconds as each photo was taken.
A number of other divers were also needed to supervise the models and make sure they did not fall or become entangled while the shoot was taking place.
Small fishing weights were attached to the dresses to keep them buoyant and create the best effect and special underwater housings were used to keep the camera equipment dry.
Sharon said: 'The model goes through a lot during a project like this. First, she's wearing nothing but a wedding dress so her body temperature rapidly decreases, making it difficult for her to keep a natural look and to hold her breath during the shots.
'Secondly, she isn't wearing a mask and so her communication with the divers around her is very limited.'In fact, the only diver she can really communicate with is her air provider, who is the only one close enough for her to see.
'The model has to hold her breath for quite long periods, which becomes more difficult the more time she spends underwater and the lower her body temperature gets.
'And, as if that's not enough, she's also tied with weights to the bottom of the sea, which doesn't add much to her sense of confidence. Great trust and magnificent water skills are required in order for a model to remain calm in such a setting.'
